Charming mid-19th century American needlework sampler, dated 1850, featuring alphabet rows in uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, decorative borders, floral motifs, trees, birds, baskets, and a central flowering plant. Executed in multicolored silk thread on linen, the sampler reflects the traditional educational exercises taught to young girls during the mid-19th century while also serving as a decorative folk art textile. Housed in a simple black-painted period-style frame.
Condition:
Good antique condition consistent with age. The linen has evenly mellowed to a warm tan with expected fading to portions of the silk threads. Minor scattered losses and light discoloration are present, along with typical age-related wear. Framed under glass. See all photos for condition.
