A distinctive late 19th to early 20th century carved oak hall bench featuring an ingenious flip-top design that converts from an elegant entry bench into a functional occasional table. Richly crafted from quarter-sawn oak, the piece displays bold hand-carved foliate and geometric decoration throughout, including dramatic winged griffin or stylized dragon-form supports, carved panel fronts, and decorative chip-carved borders. The hinged seat lifts to reveal a generous blanket chest, making this both an attractive and highly practical statement piece for an entry hall, mudroom, or living space.
Condition:
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and sturdy. Attractive original aged patina throughout. Surface exhibits expected wear including scratches, dark stains, finish wear, and small losses from generations of use. One carved support shows an old chip/loss at the tip (pictured). Hinged flip-top operates properly and storage compartment is clean and functional. A handsome antique with authentic character.
