Description

Age: Circa 1900–1910, Edwardian Period

A particularly decorative Edwardian oak washstand combining richly figured wood, a substantial marble top, colorful glazed tilework, and strong Art Nouveau design influences, dating to the early 20th century.

The washstand features a beautifully veined red-brown and gray marble top above a two-door cabinet. Each paneled door incorporates a striking section of highly figured wood with dramatic swirling grain, providing an attractive contrast to the surrounding oak. The doors retain handsome dark metal drop handles and open to reveal a spacious divided interior.

The most distinctive feature is the tall architectural backsplash. An arched field of deep green glazed tiles is punctuated by three decorative floral tiles in classic Art Nouveau taste, including stylized tulip-like motifs. The tilework is framed by carved oak spandrels and shaped side supports and surmounted by an elaborate pierced and carved crest with flowing organic lines and a central floral ornament.

Raised on four slender turned legs terminating in casters, the washstand also retains a wooden towel rail mounted along one side—a charming reminder of its original function in an Edwardian bedroom or dressing room.

Originally intended to accommodate a wash basin and pitcher before modern indoor plumbing became universal, this versatile piece now offers numerous decorative possibilities. It would make an exceptional bathroom vanity, dry bar, entry hall cabinet, server, kitchen accent piece, or decorative storage cabinet. The combination of original-style tilework, marble, figured wood, carved details, and Art Nouveau ornament gives the piece considerably more visual interest than a conventional antique washstand.

Dimensions: 59″H × 46″W × 19″D
Marble Surface: 28.5″H

Good antique condition, with wear consistent with age and use. The wood surfaces exhibit scattered scratches, small marks, finish wear, minor losses and variations in color associated with more than a century of use. The marble displays natural veining as well as expected surface wear. The green glazed tile backsplash remains highly decorative; at least one tile shows a visible crack, along with typical crazing, scratches and minor imperfections to the tile surfaces. The cabinet retains its doors, hardware, side towel rail, legs and casters. Overall, the washstand presents very well and retains an appealing, largely cohesive antique appearance.
