Description

Age: Circa 1890–1910

A handsome and highly functional antique oak clerk’s desk or writing desk, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Designed for the organized storage of correspondence, ledgers, documents, and writing implements, the desk combines a generous work surface with an unusually well-appointed fitted upper section.

The rectangular writing surface features a dark inset writing panel framed in oak and is positioned above two large side-by-side drawers with turned wooden pulls and keyholes. The desk is raised on four tall, slender turned and fluted legs, giving the substantial upper case a surprisingly graceful profile.

The upper section is particularly appealing. Two paneled cabinet doors flank a central open compartment with an arched opening and shelf. Opening the cabinets reveals a remarkably useful arrangement of shelves and vertical document dividers, while a concealed row of open pigeonholes is revealed beneath the hinged upper section. The uppermost compartment provides additional storage and closes to present a clean, architectural façade.

Traditional joinery is evident throughout, including dovetailed drawer construction, while paneled doors, molded edges, turned wooden knobs, keyholes, and the warm aged oak surface contribute considerable period character. A key is present for one of the upper cabinet locks.

This is an excellent example of purpose-built commercial or administrative furniture from the turn of the 20th century—equally suitable today as a distinctive home-office desk, library writing desk, reception piece, or statement antique.
