Description

Description:
An exceptional late George III period mahogany architect’s bureau, dating to the early 19th century, in the manner of Gillows, featuring a highly desirable adjustable double ratchet easel top with original green gilt-tooled leather inserts. This ingenious desk transforms from an elegant partner’s pedestal desk into a professional architect’s or library bureau, revealing a pullout secretaire drawer. The drawer reveals an adjustable reading slope and divided pigeonholes for letters and stationery. Slide back the writing surface to reveal another compartment with six alphabetized document drawers, and two secret hidden storage drawers. Dual pedestal configuration with six locking drawers, top two drawers each have a slide piece to hide contents. Solid brass hardware, and remarkable craftsmanship make this an outstanding statement piece for a library, executive office, or collector of English furniture. Comes with one key for the 6 bottom drawers. Imagine the history and the stories this desk has! What an amazing piece to own for anyone with a true appreciation for quality and excellence!

Condition:
Very good antique condition consistent with age and use. Beautiful rich patina throughout with attractive figured mahogany veneers. Leather writing surfaces show expected wear, scattered scratches, and some losses to the gilt tooling. The adjustable mechanisms function properly. One hinge area exhibits an old repair and associated loss (shown), with additional age-related shrinkage of wood on back of desk, surface scratches, and minor finish wear throughout. The leathers, handles and locks replaced. Structurally sound and exceptionally presentable. Please view all photos.
