Circa 1880–1890, late 19th century

A handsome and unusually decorative late 19th-century Victorian adjustable piano chair, crafted in richly finished walnut and displaying an impressive combination of carving, turned elements, and period ornamentation.

The tall back features an elaborate carved crest with bold scrolling terminals, a carved foliate panel, delicate beaded molding, and a vertical arrangement of turned spindles. Gracefully shaped legs are embellished with carved floral motifs at the knees and terminate in distinctive carved paw-form feet.

The circular wooden seat is especially attractive, retaining an elaborate polychrome and gilt foliate decoration centered by a stylized scrolling motif. The surface exhibits considerable authentic wear from generations of use, adding character and emphasizing the chair’s age.

A substantial threaded iron post beneath the seat provides the traditional revolving height-adjustment mechanism associated with Victorian piano and organ seating. Far more elaborate than the typical piano stool, this chair makes an appealing accent piece even when not used with a musical instrument.

Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Overall surface wear, scratches, finish loss, and scattered marks are present. The decorated seat exhibits noticeable wear and losses to the original decorative surface. Minor age-related separations and evidence of previous use are visible.
