Description
Circa 1930–1940, most likely English.
Striking Art Deco figured walnut bowfront display cabinet dating to the 1930s, distinguished by its dramatic book-matched walnut veneers and beautifully balanced architectural form. The cabinet features a projecting bowed center section flanked by two glazed display compartments, creating an unusually handsome combination of concealed storage and open display.
The central curved door showcases richly figured walnut veneer arranged to emphasize the natural grain, opening to reveal a shelved interior. On either side are tall glazed display doors with elegant geometric curved astragal decoration, each fitted with glass shelves and a light-colored patterned fabric interior that provides an attractive backdrop for china, art glass, porcelain, collectibles, or decorative objects.
The stepped profile and gently raised center gallery emphasize the streamlined Art Deco silhouette, while four short cabriole legs terminating in carved paw-form feet add a traditional English influence to the otherwise modern design.
At only 13 inches deep, this is an exceptionally practical display cabinet for its nearly four-foot width. The combination of richly figured walnut, curved center section, symmetrical glazing, and compact proportions makes it both decorative and highly functional.
Dimensions: 47.25″H x 47.5″W x 13″D
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The figured walnut retains attractive color and grain with scattered surface scratches, minor finish wear, edge wear and small marks consistent with age and use. The central bowed door and side glazed doors appear structurally sound. Glass shelves are present in both display compartments.
The light-colored fabric lining shows visible age-related discoloration, spotting, staining and minor separation/wear, particularly along the lower sections and upper corners. The center wooden shelving exhibits scratches and normal use wear. Decorative tassel is present.
Overall, it presents very well from the exterior, with the figured walnut veneer being the cabinet’s strongest visual feature.
